Sara Dessen was born on June 6, 1970 in Evanston, Illinois. She moved with her family to Virginia and then to North Carolina. She went to Greensboro College and then dropped out to go to UNC Chapel Hill where she graduated with high honors in creative writing. She was a waitress and then got a job offer to be a teacher at UNC. She then quit her job so that she could be a full time author. She now lives in Chapel Hill with her husband Jay, and their daughter Sasha Clementine. Her biggest influences are Southern writers like Lee Smith and Jill McCorkle.
